Jazz Up Your Living Space
Are you tired of coming home to the same drab living room that’s been greeting you with the blahs for years? If you’re like most homeowners, indecisiveness has been a greater enemy than lack of time or money. To put redecorating into perspective, know that you’re simply rearranging furniture and selecting paint colors. These aren’t big decisions. Selecting a spouse for life, naming your child, and buying your first home are the big decisions. Get on with it! Make the process less painful by following these proven tips from the professionals.
Get started by clearing the entire room. Looking at everything as a clean slate can help create a fresh perspective that makes interior decorating decisions much easier. Take down the window treatments and shine the windows both inside and out. Natural light is a huge component in every decorating scheme. Next, select a focal point in the room. This could be a fireplace, large window or large piece of furniture that serve to anchor the room. The layout of the room will work around this focal point. Take stock of the sight lines from the space into adjoining rooms. This is important when selecting a color scheme. Select a lighter, soft shade for the walls and allow pops of color to emerge in the form of pillow and accessories.
After the painting is complete, the space will begin to take on a new life. It’s amazing what one or two gallons of paint can do. Select draperies in a solid color to compliment the larger pieces of upholstery and wall color. Hang the draperies three inches from the ceiling over the window and six inches over the window on each side. This will accomplish two goals. It will allow more light in the room and draw the eye to the ceiling. Both serve to visually increase the size of the space.
Be very judicious when editing the pieces to return to the space. Limit the occasional furniture and accessories. When designing a new space, less is more. Don’t feel compelled to cover every wall space with paintings or every tabletop with accessories. If you have many prices that you truly love, rotate them in and out of the space seasonally.
Faux wood blinds are another easy and inexpensive way to liven things up. Not only are they easy to measure and hang, but you can even order them online and have them delivered to your door. They are much easier to maintain than real wood blinds, and they look just as nice.
Congratulations! You’ve just reworked your space and made it an inviting place to return to at the end of a long day. No doubt you now have the confidence to tackle the next room in your home. Good luck!
