How To Ensure Your Upholstery Can Withstand The Test of time

by Robert Chancellor

You have probably heard the phrase ‘don’t make them like they used to’ and wondered if there is any truth to it. The truth is that many more items are manufactured in factories and come as flat-packed items. It is fair to say these are made to a different standard to older pieces of furniture.

But, the truth in how long a piece of furniture will last is mainly down to how well looked after it is. Of course, there are several things you can do to facilitate its longevity.

Get It Upholstered Properly

If you speak to a professional in furniture restorations you’ll find that they use traditional methods to reupholster furniture and that these techniques are very effective at lasting for the long term.

If you want your upholstery to last and you are repairing an older piece of furniture then you need to see a professional. But, even if you are using modern furniture you’ll find it’s a good idea to see a furniture restoration specialist. They will be able to upholster new furniture which will help to ensure it lasts for many years, regardless of what you throw at it!

Consider The Material

A large proportion of getting the upholstery to withstand the test of time is to have it stitched by a professional as this helps to ensure it won’t easily come apart.

But, the material you choose for the upholstery can also have an effect on the longevity of the item.

However, you’ll also need to consider what you are using the item for.

For example, wool, velvet, and linen are known to last for a very long time. They are durable, comfortable, and built to last.

In contrast, engineered fabrics, such as acrylics are not designed to last for as long as natural materials, they will degrade over time. However, they are the better choice if your furniture is designed to be used inside and outside. This type of fabric will withstand the elements better and last longer, although it may not offer the same level of plushness as a quality wool finish.

You should, of course, consider leather as this is a robust and durable fabric that will last for many years. It is colder to sit on but, when an item is upholstered properly, leather furniture can outlast almost any other material.

Naturally, you’ll need to maintain the leather to ensure it remains soft and colorfast.

Don’t forget that silk and rayon-based products are hard to look after, you’ll want to avoid using these on any item that is used regularly.

Maintain It!

It’s already been mentioned but it is important to stress that maintenance makes all the difference to your upholstery.

Simply cleaning the upholstery on a regular basis and eliminating stains when they happen will help to ensure your furniture looks great and survives the test of time. All you have to do is confirm the right maintenance process for the material you have chosen.
