When you are building a new home from scratch, it is one of the first things that you have to consider; what each part of it will be made from.
Needless to say, in 2023, most homes built in the USA still have an outer layer of brick and have windows that are made from double or triple-ply windows, which are a mixture of plastic and glass. But what about the roof?
Unless you are a roofer or builder, you may have never given much thought to what materials a roof can be made from, and it can come as a bit of a surprise to many home builders when they learn about the different materials that are available.
So, here are five very interesting materials that you can make your roof from. Enjoy!
Metal
One material that many people don’t consider is metal. And no, it will not give your home a shimmering top (unless you want it to!).
Metal roofing shingles are made from materials like aluminum, copper, or steel and are available in a variety of colors and styles. Metal roofing is lightweight, durable, and energy-efficient, but it can be noisy during rainstorms.
Also, you will usually need to hire a specialized contractor to fit it correctly.
Wood
Wooden shingles are made from cedar, redwood, or pine and are cut into thin, tapered shapes. They are more expensive than asphalt shingles, but they have a natural, rustic look that is popular with some homeowners.
However, they will require more regular sealing and maintenance to prevent them from rotting. And, much like the metal roofing options, you will need to hire a specialist contractor to ensure that they are fitted properly.
Clay or Concrete
Clay and concrete tiles are made from natural materials and are known for their durability and long lifespan. These tiles are also available in a variety of colors and styles, meaning that they can be shaped into larger slates or smaller shingles, depending on the look you want for your roof.
But be aware that they may require a thicker support structure underneath them, as they are heavier than other roofing options.
Plastic or Synthetic
Plastic or synthetic roofing shingles are made from a variety of synthetic materials and are designed to mimic the look of wood, slate, or clay tiles. They are lightweight and easy to install, but they may not be as durable as other types of roofing shingles.
However, much like the concrete shingles and tiles, the easier manufacturing of this type of tiling means that they can be molded into any shape and size you want, making it ideal for homes that have an unusual shape.
Slate
Slate is a natural stone that is cut into thin, rectangular shapes and used as roofing tiles. Slate shingles are very durable and long-lasting, but they are also very expensive, as they have a higher manufacturing cost due to the tools needed to shape them. But it has to be said, these types of tiles look extremely pretty!
