Unique facts about mice that you may not have known

  • Mice can squeeze through a gap of 0.6cm.

Mice are extremely flexible creatures and have the ability to flatten their bodies which allows them to fit through almost any gap or hole. A mouse can fit through a hole of 0.6 cm, roughly the size of a pencil. For this reason, it becomes so easy for them to get inside their homes.

  • Mice infestations are more common than you think.

If you detect mice in your house, you do not need to be ashamed about it as mice are present in around 21 million homes in the United States alone. They usually look for shelter and food during the winter months, between October and February.

  • Mice have heightened senses.

Although mice have poor vision, they have an excellent sense of smell, hearing, and touch. You may think you can catch them due to their poor vision, but because their other senses are so heightened at all times, it is harder to catch them.

  • Mice do not like the cold weather.

You may have noticed mice infesting your house in the winter season. This is because they are not fond of winters and prefer to stay in cozy and warm household conditions where they can get easy access to food resources.

  • Mice have big appetites.

Just because they have a tiny body does not mean they eat less. Mice are hungry creatures and eat about 15-20 times a day. Because of how frequently they require food, they build their homes near their food sources.

  • Mice teeth never stop growing.

The teeth of mice grow about 0.3mm every day. This is why they have to gnaw on various items, ranging from cardboards to wires, to grind their teeth and keep them at a reasonable length.

  • Mice have travel OCD.

As strange as it may sound, mice prefer to travel adjacent walls and along edges. Despite their powers to climb, run and jump extremely well, they have peculiar travel tendencies.

A female mouse can start giving birth at the age of just two weeks and can reproduce around a dozen babies every three weeks. This means that a single mouse can give birth to 150 babies in one year. If you think one or two mice in your house won’t make a difference, think again.
