Buying a new home – how often should it be inspected for pests?

Moving into a new property can be a stressful experience. Aside from actually completing the purchase of the property, you have to move a multitude of furniture and belongings from your old home to the new one. Packing up can take a lot longer than you think, so it’s best to start preparing a few weeks before the move.

Once you are in your new home, there are many other tasks to complete. One of these tasks, that is often not thought of, is working out how often you should have your new home inspected for pests.

  • Working out the right pest inspection frequency

You may want to ask the previous owners of the property, how often they had it checked for pests. You can also make your own decision, based on the area where you are now living, and what the situation is with infestations.

Southern US states tend to have humid weather conditions; a situation that suits pests such as termites which thrive in warm, damp conditions. If you live in one of these states, and there is a high incidence of pests in the area, it’s a good idea to have a pest inspection carried out at least once every six months.

If you live in the north of the country, your property may not need to be inspected as frequently but there is still a chance that you could experience a pest infestation. Pests such as fleas and cockroaches are resilient to colder conditions, and need to be eradicated if they invade your home. You should aim to have a pest inspection carried out once every one to two years.

  • Why are pest inspections so important?

You may be wondering why it’s so important to have your home inspected for pests. The fact is that you may not be aware that you have a pest problem, and any pests that are present could be causing damage; such as the destruction that termites can cause to the wooden structure of your home. Pests can also spread bacteria, and diseases such as salmonella. The urine and faeces of pests can also have an adverse effect on conditions such as asthma.

You should never assume that you would know if there were pests in your home. Invaders such as termites can be especially difficult to spot. By the time you realise they are there, they could have caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damage. It’s not worth taking a chance on this happening. Setting up a regular pest inspection schedule means that professionals will call to your home and check for entry points that need to be filled in. They will also check for any sign of pests being present. If your home is infested, they will talk you through the options, including how many treatments will be needed, and help make sure that your home becomes pest free once again.
