Moving is difficult enough as it is, but if you have a lot of furniture, it adds another layer of complexity. You have to factor in not only how you’ll move it, but also how you will pack it into the moving truck.
Although you can easily hire someone to do this for you, if you want to do it yourself, you have to keep the cost to transport furniture in mind as well. Buying a lot of things to help you move makes it a bit of a moot point.

- Manually Move the Furniture
Although this is the most difficult method, it is possible to move the furniture manually as long as you’re safe and efficient about it.
If you have two people available, you can do the high-low method. This is when you will tilt the furniture back so that one person is carrying the top while the other person remains low and carries the lower half. Keep this angle up as you start to move so that you don’t have to set the furniture all the way back up when you’re ready to set it down.
Always bend from your knees and use your core (as well as leg muscles) to lift. You can damage your back if you don’t lift the right way.
- Use Furniture Sliders
You can buy furniture sliders at a lot of hardware stores or home goods stores. They come in different sizes, so make sure to get the size that is most appropriate for the furniture that you’ll be moving. Additionally, if you are going to be moving the furniture over difficult surfaces, like carpet, you’ll want sliders that are made for that purpose.
Put the sliders under your furniture at each corner with the smooth edge on the bottom (facing the floor). Then, you can simply push the furniture without worrying that it will scratch or damage your floor.
- Invest in Dollies or Blankets
You can buy a standard dolly that you use on the floor or you can invest in a shoulder dolly. Shoulder dollies are designed to connect to your shoulders and take the weight off your back with extra leverage.
Moving blankets can also be used in a similar way to what sliders would be used for, but you’ll place the whole blanket under the furniture before moving it. You can also use these to create a ramp up stairs if you wrap them up.
If you hire professional movers, they will likely have some of this equipment ready to go so that they can keep your furniture safe. When transporting furniture from state to state, they may even request that you wrap the furniture in blankets to keep it secure.
